Mythbusting: If my data is encrypted, why do I need to secure my storage?
Many people ask me why they need to harden their storage systems, if they’re already encrypting their data.
Let me explain why.
Data encryption won’t prevent attackers from hacking into an organization’s storage systems. And once inside, attackers can delete petabytes of data volumes – whether they’re encrypted or not.
Let’s use an analogy:
You could say that data is the jewel, resting inside a safe – that’s the storage system. So, placing a jewel in a safe doesn’t prevent anyone from exploiting the safe’s vulnerabilities and misconfigurations, in order to steal the jewel.
How secure is your safe?
You can easily find out with a one-time scan, to reveal all security risks within your storage and backup systems. It’s worth the peace of mind.
